Chapter 38
Summary

Offred goes to the washrooms and is ushered by an Aunt. She does not immediately find Moira and is unsure whether it is a good idea to ask about her. She finds several women smoking, and while she stands there unsure of what to do, Moira walks out of a cubicle. They hug one another, and Moira tells her story. She explains her actions after she had escaped from the Red Centre and her planned escape. She proceeds to note that she was eventually caught in Maine and taken by ‘The Eye’. She was tortured and shown videos of the dreaded Colonies. In these videos, old women were forced to clean up radioactive waste, and the dead bodies of the war, all in heinous conditions. She was given a choice between going to the Colonies or working as a prostitute at Jezebel’s – terrified by the potential horrors of the Colonies, she chose to work at the club, the lifestyle seemingly having stripped her of her spark and will to escape

Analysis

Offred reunites with Moira, and through Moira’s story, we learn of the unique challenges that she had faced and the circumstances she had been through. It also becomes clear that Moira was, in fact, worse off than Offred, despite Offred having thought otherwise. This is demonstrated when Offred tells Moira “You look like something the cat dragged in. This conversation brings to light the fact that women in these dystopian times had been threatened and degraded into demeaning positions. They had gotten used to such lowly conditions that they believed it was their place, and even bragged about it. This is exemplified when Offred responds with “Isn't that what I'm supposed to look like?” after Moira tells her that she looks like the whore of Babylon, taking pride it her comparatively pitiful appearance and purpose.
