The British colonization in America began with a failed settlement attempt in Roanoke
and the newfound and but the English men eventually established their authority in America and
became more successful than the Spanish. "Most modern American citizens acknowledge Britain
as their European "mother" country, although by the time the British arrived to establish their
first permanent settlement at Jamestown in 1607, other European countries had already claimed
parts of the continent" (Spielvogel 426).
There are various reasons why, probably, the British became more successful in
establishing American colonies than the Spanish. From the start, the British came intending to
settle in the region. In contrast, the Spanish who only viewed the area as another source of
resources that were to be sent back home. With the mentality that they wanted to make America
their home, the British had to maintain their commitment to establishing themselves in the
