k Discussions After you have read chapters 23 and 24 (especially 24), complete this assignment on the discussion board. See the Discussion Requirements page. This term I have had you all focus on reading primary documents for the assignments (documents written in the relevant time period). This week you are going to "read" another kind of primary document, photographs. The Great Depression was exhaustively documented by the Farm Security Administration (FSA). The FSA mostly worked with farmers to loan them money for improvements and training. However, a legacy of that New Deal program are the hundreds of thousands of photographs that were taken by professionals to document conditions in the rural US. To start, go to Photogrammar and read about the Farm Security Administration's origins and mission of the photographers. (On the “About” page) [http://photogrammar.yale.edu/about/fsa owi/ SEE NOTE BELOW IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH PHOTOGRAMMAR. Then click on "Home" and start exploring the collection. Note that you can click on the interactive map to look at images of specific regions, or you can use the search function to find images of specific towns, counties, photographers, or topics. You might like to look at k Discussions : OOK at photographers, or topics. Yo might like your home state or search for topics like the Dust Bowl, nurse, or sharecropper. Click on images to see them in more detail and read the descriptions. A note about searching - tags used on images... Spend at least half an hour going through images to get an idea of the scope of the collection. It is enormous! Be sure you are looking at images from the 1930s (not the 1940s!). Then analyze the images to answer the following questions on the discussion board: (approximately 3 paragraphs) What do these images tell you about the Great Depression that words cannot convey? Compare and contrast images from different regions of the US. In what ways were conditions similar and in what ways were they different? What accounts for the differences? [Hint - be sure to use what you learned in the textbook in your analysis of the images.] + Discussions CITATIONS: When referring to specific photographs, be sure to cite its call number. The call number of each image is listed in the image description along the left-hand side and will look something like this: LC-USF34-019198. PROBLEMS WITH PHOTOGRAMMAR WEBSITE: used this database for the first time a couple of years ago. At that time, a few students had technical problems which the Photogrammar staff have since fixed. However, if you have problems accessing the images on Photogrammar, you can also find them on the Library of Congress website: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/? st=grid&co=fsa [For those of you interested in Alabama history, try "Gees Bend". Gees Bend, Alabama, had the unfortunate distinction of being located in the single poorest county in the nation (according to state and federal data at the time).] NOTE: Comments should be substantive. That means that you should be making a comment or asking a question that will lead to substantive discussion. Do not make empty comments, such “I totally agree with you” or “nice post."

What the images say about the great depression
The images show that the Great Depression was a period of great suffering for the
American people. The great depression caused joblessness, food shortages, deflation, and
plunging farm incomes (Szostak, 2019). Workers lost their jobs, and companies were closed,
including banks, as farmers defaulted on their loans. Farme...
