The Diary of Lady Sarashina (1009-1059)
Summary: This document is a story of the life of a woman in the 11th century Japan and placed
under the translation of Annie Shepley Omori and Kochi Doi. The author, Sugawara no Takasue
no Musume embarks on a journey from the wild east of Japan to the capital and begins writing a
diary that she kept for forty years which she would compile later to demonstrate her feelings and
the place of woman in 11th century Japanese culture (Omori & Doi, 1996). The Sarashina Diary
portrays a writer as a reader and how she explores the power of reading to shape her aspirations
as well as expectations.
Some of the aspects of her life and text look modern in comparison to the 11th-century
